WINCHESTER, VA, UNITED STATES, September 1, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Kerno, Inc. today announced its acquisition of Scan Simple from Nexus Box LLC, the award-recognized web development and ecommerce agency that originally designed and developed the barcode labeling platform. The acquisition expands the Kerno product family and gives Kerno a proven foundation for accelerating future scanning, label-rendering, and printing capabilities across its ecosystem.

Scan Simple helps businesses create scannable labels for unpackaged or custom-quantity products without manually entering product and quantity information at checkout. Its focused workflow allows a user to scan or enter a master UPC or SKU, set a quantity or measurement, create an order-specific scan or SKU, render a barcode label, and send it through a local connector for printing.

That workflow is especially useful for businesses selling products by weight, length, count, or custom package size. Potential applications include fabric and quilting stores selling cut yardage, specialty-food retailers selling by weight, and stores handling rope, ribbon, cable, flooring, paper, or other products prepared in variable quantities.

“Acquiring Scan Simple gives Kerno a proven foundation for making barcode labeling and finished-goods workflows easier for product businesses,” said Michael D. Savino, CEO and co-founder of Kerno. “Instead of beginning with a concept, we are building from a live platform developed around a real checkout problem. That allows us to move faster while protecting the focused experience Scan Simple users already understand.”

Scan Simple remains a standalone product within the Kerno family. Businesses can continue using it as a focused scanning, labeling, and printing utility, while Kerno continues developing broader operational software for makers and small-batch manufacturers. Kerno manages the wider production picture—including materials, formulas, packaging, batches, lots, quality control, finished goods, costing, and inventory.

The companies serve complementary parts of the product journey. Kerno helps a business understand what it is making, what materials went into it, what quality steps were completed, what it cost, and what inventory is available. Scan Simple focuses on turning the relevant product and quantity information into a practical barcode-label workflow that can support checkout.

Kerno plans to use the acquired technology to accelerate future connections between production records and label creation. The long-term direction is for Kerno to remain the source of truth for product, batch, lot, quality, cost, and inventory data, while Scan Simple’s rendering and printing capabilities support label requests for approved finished goods. Integration details, timing, compatibility, and availability will be announced only after those capabilities are developed and verified.

The acquisition also reflects the longstanding relationship between Kerno and Nexus Box LLC. Nexus Box originally created Scan Simple as a custom software solution for businesses that needed a better way to label variable-quantity products. The Winchester, Virginia-based agency builds and stabilizes websites, ecommerce platforms, custom applications, and digital systems for businesses and creative agencies. Its work has been recognized through the Web Excellence Awards and Winchester Awards.

“Nexus Box was built to solve operational problems with durable technology, and Scan Simple is a direct example of that work,” Savino said. “Bringing the platform into Kerno gives it a product home that is closely aligned with the needs it was designed to serve. It also lets the Nexus Box team’s original work become part of a broader effort to help product businesses operate with more clarity.”

For Kerno, the acquisition is part of a deliberate expansion beyond core production management. Barcode creation and label printing are practical links between a completed production run and the moment a product reaches a customer. Owning Scan Simple allows Kerno to develop that link without turning Scan Simple into a manufacturing platform or forcing current users into a larger system.

Scan Simple currently supports barcode-label rendering and local printing workflows, including Zebra ZPL and documented DYMO label formats. Exact printer model, operating system, label stock, connector version, and point-of-sale barcode requirements should be confirmed for each implementation. Scan Simple does not currently serve as Kerno’s inventory system of record, and no live Kerno-to-Scan Simple integration is being announced with this release.

Kerno is currently available in a free Beta for businesses that make physical products. That Beta offer applies to Kerno while Kerno remains in Beta; Scan Simple remains a separate standalone product with its own plans and terms.
