Park Place Construction has launched a homeowner awareness effort on identifying storm-related roof damage, publishing educational guidance for residents of Calvert County and surrounding communities following months of repeated severe thunderstorm activity across the region.
The effort responds to a summer pattern driven by convective storms rather than tropical systems. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning on July 9, 2026 covering southern Calvert County, citing wind gusts capable of reaching 60 mph and noting that damaging winds could bring down trees and large branches and damage homes and vehicles. A tornado watch followed on July 28 for Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties, upgrading an earlier severe thunderstorm watch that had covered much of the state.

That pattern has developed alongside a quiet tropical season. In its August 6 update, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration raised the probability of a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season to 75 percent, reporting two named storms and no hurricanes to that point. The contrast is the reason the company chose to publish now.
“A quiet hurricane forecast is not a quiet forecast for roofs,” said Albert DeCesaris, Owner and Lead Builder at Park Place Construction. “Almost everything that has hit roofs around here this year came out of an ordinary summer thunderstorm, not a named storm. Homeowners hear that the season is slow and reasonably conclude their roof came through fine.”
The awareness material addresses where roof leaks typically originate, how gutter and downspout systems handle the volume of water a roof collects, and what manufacturer training programs require of the crews installing a shingle system. It is being distributed through the company’s website and local community channels.
The National Weather Service classifies a thunderstorm as severe when it produces wind gusts of 58 mph or greater, hail one inch or larger in diameter, or a tornado. Winds in that range can lift and unseal shingles, crease them so they no longer lie flat, and disturb flashing at the points where a roof meets a wall, a chimney or a dormer.
Damage of that kind frequently goes unaddressed because it produces no immediate symptom. Flashing that has shifted can admit water with no outward sign at all. Granule loss accelerates wear on the asphalt underneath. Gutters displaced or blocked by storm debris redirect runoff toward the foundation instead of away from the structure, producing problems that a homeowner is unlikely to connect back to the roof.
The guidance also addresses how water behaves once it gets past the surface. Water entering at a valley or a penetration can travel along framing members some distance before it reaches a ceiling, which is why the visible stain often sits well away from the actual point of entry. That distance is the reason a leak is diagnosed by tracing the path back to its source rather than by patching the nearest visible spot.
DeCesaris said the sequence matters as much as any single event. “A storm rarely finishes a roof on its own,” he said. “What it does is open a path. Then the ordinary rain that follows does the rest of the work over the next year or two, and by the time anyone notices, the conversation has moved from a repair to something larger.”

Roofing products are engineered to function as a system, and manufacturers publish specific requirements governing how the components are installed together. Crews trained through a manufacturer’s own program work from those published methods, and the conditions a manufacturer attaches to its warranty coverage generally depend on the installation meeting them.
The awareness effort is aimed at the period between the summer storm season and the historical peak of the Atlantic season, which the National Hurricane Center places from mid-September through October. Roof conditions established during summer thunderstorms carry into that window, and the company’s guidance encourages homeowners to understand the condition of a roof before the later part of the season rather than after.
